I chose Option 4, Instructional Unit, for my final project to show how both, myself and students, use technology integration into the curriculum. I am the Business Education teacher and FBLA adviser at Fayetteville High School. FBLA stands for Future Business Leaders of America and it is a requirement for career and technical education program to integrate our youth organization activities into our classroom instruction. The "Go Green" Project my students completed represents everything FBLA is about: Service, Education, and Progress. The students chose activities that provided a service to the community, educated themselves about going green and using various presentation tools, and allowed them to progress in their leadership ability. I also like using project-based learning as an instructional strategy in my classroom.
What We Did
I created a class wikispace for the project; including the lesson plan, project requirements, and link for each student team to collaborate and showcase their emerging technology. Before construction of the wikispace took place, students were divided into teams where they selected a team leader and created their team name. As the students began working on the project; they created flyers, bulletin boards, and chose a web tool or presentation tool to demonstrate their research about Earth Day and ways to "go green." Students used the wikispace to insert pictures, files, and their presentation on "going green." They were given choices of which tools they could use: Prezi, Mixbook, Glogster, Blabberize, Voicethread, and Movie Maker. All choices were selected except for Voicethread. Students were encouraged to participate and make a contribution to the research and activities selected in the layered curriculum.
